- WHAT IS LASERSET?
-
- LaserSet is a menu-driven utility that gives you easy set-up of
- Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printers.
-
- For example, LaserSet facilitates font selection. Tell LaserSet
- what font cartridge you are using and it will describe all fonts
- available for selection (including the resident fonts available
- with your model of the LaserJet). Select the desired font with a
- single keystroke and LaserSet will send to the LaserJet all the
- necessary control sequences needed to print with it. If you
- want, select a secondary font and switch fonts during printing
- (for example, between normal and italic styles).
-
- LaserSet also lets you control resetting the printer, paper size,
- lines per vertical inch, font pitch override, top, bottom, left
- and right margins, end of line wrap, number of printed copies of
- each page, graphics resolution, and whether to feed paper from
- the cassette tray or the manual feed slot.
-
- LaserSet calculates and displays the number of printed lines per
- page as a function of whether your font prints normally (Portrait
- mode) or sideways (Landscape mode), the selected paper size, and
- the selected lines per vertical inch.
-
- You can save your favorite settings in special set-up files that
- LaserSet can later interpret and send to the LaserJet automati-
- cally. In other words, you can set-up the LaserJet the way you
- want in a single command line from DOS.
-
- LaserSet also lets you store the raw setup values (escape se-
- quences) in a data file which can be used by other applications
- to set-up the LaserJet (for example, from a BASIC program).
-
-
-
- LASERSET IS USER SUPPORTED
-
- You're encouraged to copy and share LaserSet with others. If
- after evaluating this program you find it to be useful, you're
- trusted to send a $35.00 payment to:

- User-supported software is an experiment in distributing computer
- programs, based on these beliefs:
-
- 1. That the value and utility of software is best assessed by
- the user on his/her own system.
-
- 2. That the creation of personal computer software can and
- should be supported by the computing community.
-
- 3. That copying of programs should be encouraged, rather than
- restricted.
-
- LaserSet is not a public domain program, and never has been.
- It is Copyright(C) 1985, 1986, 1987 by R. Shaw. Individuals are
- granted permission by the author to freely copy the LaserSet
- program with documentation for their own use or for others to
- evaluate, so long as no price or other consideration is charged.

- Packard Corporation. IBM is a registered trademark of Interna-

-
- WHAT TYPE OF COMPUTER DO I NEED TO USE LASERSET?
-
- LaserSet is written to run on the IBM PC family and fully compa-
- tibles under DOS 2.0 and higher. You will also need at least a
- single disk drive and 128,000 (128K) characters of memory.
-
-
-
- BEFORE GETTING STARTED
-
- For LaserSet to work properly, make sure your microcomputer is
- properly connected to the LaserJet and that you have correctly
- configured DOS to communicate with it. If you don't know how to
- do this then consult the installation procedures in the LaserJet
- Owner's Manual.

- FILES
-
- Here are the LaserSet program files:
-
- LASERSET.EXE LaserSet program. Gives menu-driven set-up
- of the LaserJet. Also interprets automatic
- set-up files created with LaserSet.
-
- LS.HLP Help file for the LaserSet program. This is
- not a viewable file. If LS.HLP is not
- stored in the same directory you run Laser-
- Set from, you need to use the DOS SET com-
- mand to add the environment variable LSHELP.
- LSHELP specifies where LaserSet is to look
- for its help file. For example, adding the
- following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- SET LSHELP=C:\SYSTEM
-
- makes LaserSet look in the subdirectory
- SYSTEM for LS.HLP.
-
- D.JET Default setup file. If D.JET is not stored
- in the same directory you run LaserSet from,
- you need to use the DOS SET command to add
- the environment variable LSDEF. LSDEF
- specifies where LaserSet is to look for the
- default setup file. For example, adding the
- following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- SET LSDEF=C:\SYSTEM
-
- makes LaserSet look in the subdirectory
- SYSTEM for D.JET.
-
- PORTCOUR.JET Sample LaserSet automatic setup file.
- LANDCOUR.JET Sample LaserSet automatic setup file.
-
- LASERSET.PIF MicroSoft Windows PIF file.
-
-
-
- STARTING LASERSET
-
- Before using LaserSet the LaserJet must be on and warmed up (in-
- dicated by a displayed status code of 00 on the front panel). If
- the font cartridge you want to use for printing is not inserted
- in the LaserJet at this time, turn the printer off-line by press-
- ing the ON LINE panel indicator, insert the desired font car-
- tridge, then press the ON LINE indicator again. Make sure the
- LaserJet's displayed status code is 00 (Printer Ready) before
- continuing.

-
-
-
- We'll assume throughout this manual that your your LaserSet work-
- ing disk is in drive A. If your working disk is another drive,
- substitute that drive's letter in the following examples. There
- are three methods of starting LaserSet.
-
- * The first method takes you through LaserSet's menus to set-
- up the LaserJet. In this case, type:
-
- A>LASERSET <Enter>
-
- LaserSet's first menu page will appear.
-
- * The second method is used if you have created a LaserSet
- automatic set-up file (this is an option available when
- using the first method). This file has the file extension
- ".JET" and contains previously defined set-up information.
- LaserSet interprets this file, displays the set-up values,
- sets-up the LaserJet, and then returns to DOS. In this
- case, type:
-
- A>LASERSET FILENAME.JET <Enter>
-
- OR
-
- A>LASERSET FILENAME <Enter>
-
- where FILENAME is the name of the LaserSet setup file you
- created. For example, on the distribution disk is a sample
- automatic set-up file called LANDCOUR.JET. If you type:
-
- A>LASERSET LANDCOUR.JET <Enter>
-
- OR
-
- A>LASERSET LANDCOUR <Enter>
-
- LaserSet will set-up the LaserJet to print in Landscape mode
- (sideways) with a Courier typeface. This font is available
- as one of the two fonts permanently resident in the Laser-
- Jet's memory.
-
- * The third method is used if you want to set the LaserJet to
- its Default values. These default values are the printer
- defaults when the LaserJet is turned on (for example, the
- paper size and default font). In this case, type:
-
- A>LASERSET D <Enter>
-
- LaserSet will reset the LaserJet to its default values then
- return to DOS. This is useful for clearing a special prin-
- ter set-up (for example, Landscape printing). For this
- command to work a LaserSet automatic set-up file called
- D.JET must have been created. This file tells LaserSet what
- port your LaserJet is attached to.

- USING LASERSET'S MENUS
-
- LaserSet menus are simple to use and guide you step-by-step
- through setting up the LaserJet. How to make selections in that
- menu is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Selections are
- usually made with a combination of the cursor arrow keys and the
- Enter key. If you need help, just press F1 and you'll get an
- explanation of the current options. Pressing the ESC (Escape)
- key in any menu page except the first will return you to Laser-
- Set's Menu Page 1. Pressing ESC in Menu Page 1 page will return
- you to DOS.
-
- Good Luck!
